Prednisone can work, and is only used as a short-term treatment while the fleas are dealt with. Any dog with flea allergies is going to go nuts from a single bite.
Why won't you ask your vet these questions? They're the ones who will be supplying you with the medication (I HOPE) and obviously they're not going to give your dog anything inappropriate.
What flea meds are you using? If they're not from a vet, they're not going to be working. You need Frontline Plus, or perhaps Revolution, Advocate or Advantage with a Program tablets regularly, and regular spraying of your house and furniture (again, don't use anything from a pet store).
Address this question to a vet, don't trust advice from strangers over the internet.
