My husband and I started a methadone treatment about four years ago and it was a lifesaver. I took a much lower dose than he did (60MG) and was able to reduce the dose to 40mg, then switching to suboxone and kicking without too many problems. It was much easier than I thought it would be.
My husband is still on a maintanance treatment and has taken about 220MG (above legal dose for the average person) and he has been able to maintain a steady lifestyle and a great job.
The only drawback to methadone is that you're tied to the clinic and they can pretty much do whatever they want to you (cut your dose, make you come in more often, generally harrass you) because most towns only have one, maybe two clinics.
I would recommend this to anyone struggling with opiate dependence, trying to go cold turkey sucks and even then you'll probably relapse and do it all over again (been there).

I can't count how many fairly strong-willed people I know to be on Suboxone regimens for relatively long periods of time, albeit not as long as methadone in cases I'm aware of. I'd a heck of a lot rather be on Suboxone than methadone, but that you're saying, Swaygirl, is just more ridiculous disinformation if you intend readers to believe that's anything even remotely close to a likely or common experience.

Don't you realize that these assh--- clinics WANT you to STAY on Methadone for as long as they can take your money?
I don't know you, what YOU do or WHERE you get your info from but no matter what, people ARE going to experience some withdrawal! I work with Doctors that are disgusted with these clinics. The longer and higher dose of methadone, the harder it is to kick.
The point is that people CAN switch and make the detox in less time.
However that person REALLY HAS to want it. Maybe YOU should read tfitz1017's article. People who are trying to kick any opiate really need to do so inpatient.
Oh and next time, don't bother "toning it down" let me and the people know how ignorant and misinformed you REALLY are!
PEACE!

Methadone is a misunderstood, underprescribed, medication for chronic pain. Even doctors do not understand its potential for improving chronic pain sufferers lives.
Methadone is a narcotic pain reliever for medium to severe pain. It is also used in the treatment of heroin (opiate dependence: Vicodin, Percocet, Morphine, ect) addiction.

I know this post is old, but I had to reply. It sounds like you are living my life beatricks. My hubby and I were on methadone for an oxycontin addiction for 2 1/2 years then found a really great doctor who prescribes suboxone. I drive 3 1/2 hours every month to go see him, but it's worth it. The down side is we've been on suboxone for almost 3 years. But I knew people at the methadone clinic who had been there 15 or 20 years! And you're right, they screw with you however you please and treat everyone like junkies. Addiction can happen to anyone, it happened to me. I consider myself hard working, college educated, smart individual, but at the clinic we were just all thieving junkies. Suboxone is a wonderful medication. Yes some might say I've traded one addiction for another, but I haven't had a relapse since starting suboxone in early 2007. Finding the right doctor is the key. Someone compassionate helps. And if you don't do the whole narcotics anonymous (I don't , small town, everyone knows me) find a friend or therapist to talk to, to get you through those tough cravings. Just my experience.
