Anybody experiencing symptoms withdrawing from Tramadol (Ultram)?
I have an avulsion injury to my thumb....my thumb went to far back playing softball and it tore the tendon. It was "supposingly" corrected by the doctor, but because I still have pain I am going to get a second opinion. However, I have been talking tramadol for a year because I was told and I see that anti-inflammatories do not help. (its not a inflammatory condition). My doctor said it wasn't addictive...yet I have tried to come off of it and had hellish nights of body crawls, sweating, sleep-wake cycles, and during the day i'm depressed, slow, and very alert. I feel disconnected. I knew this was an opiod binder but I just found out it will increase serotonin...so no wonder this stuff can be addictive.

So when I try to come off of it I still have pain...and my doctor isn't getting it....what a mess! Anybody have this issue? I know that it is taken for certain rhematoid issues...

Glad to report, I was prescribed it at ER, brought it home, took it and vomited! I still have the left overs in the medicine cabinet! However YOU the Patient have to be calculated over coming off it! You do not state what mgs you were on, so what you need to do is detox your body and mind. Therefore if you were on say 100mgs twice a day, then you need to start by saying tomorrow I am only going to take 100 mgs, however the day after I can take 200 mgs. This is what they call weaning your body off. So say you start on Monday with 200mgs, Tuesday 100mgs, Wednesday 200mgs, Thursday 100mgs, Friday 200 mgs, Saturday 100 mgs, Sunday 200mgs. Then the following week you reduce the 200mgs to 150mgs, might have to break the pill in half. So then you are on Monday 100mgs, Tuesday 150 mgs, Wednesday 100mgs, and so on. The next week will be 100 mgs per day. Then you start with 100mgs on Monday and 50mgs on Tuesday. Until you get to 50mgs per day. Then break the pill again, so now you have 25mgs every other day and then the following week everyday. That is how you come off ANY pain killer. Best of Luck

If you can, I think gillianprowe may have a good idea.
Although I don't usually recommend this to my patients because most of the time they really need outside help trying to withdrawal from any opiate.
If you do think you're strong enough (after a year of use I would REALLY get help) try and taper off as earlier suggested. How many mgs are you taking daily?
The only difference I would suggest is that depending on how much you are using, see if you can first cut it totally in half and see if you're comfortable with that. Then try it again, see how you feel. When you start feeling uncomfortable, only taper by about 25-50mg increments.
You ARE going to have SOME discomfort but for the most part, if you can get thru the hardest part, the beginning, you can do it!!
Good luck! I hope this helps. Let me know if I can help further. You can find my e-mail in my profile.
