Has anyone taken the medication Tramadol or Ultram though out your entire pregnancy?
I am very well aware that you not to take medication other than Tylenol for pain however I am curious to know if despite that has anyone had to still take this medicine during their pregnancies.

(PLEASE DON'T ANSWER IF YOU ARE JUST GOING TO QUOTE THE CATAGORY C INFORMATION AND STATE EXACTLY WHAT I HAVE JUST MENTIONED.)

I would really appreciate people’s personal experiences with this drug. If anyone out there has taken this medication throughout your entire pregnancy can you please tell me about it? How did your pregnancy go? Did it cause any harm to your child? There is not a lot of research on this exact medication during pregnancy through out the entire pregnancy and I wanted to get as much research as possible to gather for myself and others that have been concerned with this.

Thank you very much

I was on tramadol/ultram for stomach pain prior to my pregnancy and took it about 5 times after pregnancy because I didn't know i was pregnant. I told the Dr and he said that they will monitor the baby while i am pregnant and that the risk to my baby will be increased risk of seizures from the use of the meds while pregnant. The way Tramadol works is numbing the nerves in your brain so you can't feel the pain. The longer you take it the more risk there is to the baby in regards to seizures and brain problems. They aren't sure how much other problems it can cause but they do know there is increased risk of seizures. Right now I am only 18 wks pregnant so I can't tell you how this will affect my baby for sure only what the Dr's have told me repeatedly about the meds. The Dr told me the largest risk is use during first trimester but that there is still a large risk during pregnancy. He showed me some research that had been done recently on Tramadol that shows that babies born after repeated use of Tramadol are more likely to have seizure disorders and other learning problems and some have shown signs of heart problems as well. It isn't worth the risk.

I'm a 28 year old woman that gave birth to a very healthy son on 2/16/08. I took ultram throughout my pregnancy with the exception of the 1st trimester. I took about 4 ultram a day. I had a stable pregnancy, no major complications. My baby experienced no signs of withdraw/discomfort. He's almost 6 months and he's perfectly healthy in every way. I did not breastfeed b/c I continued to take ultram after he was born. They say the 1st trimester is the most dangerous when taking medicine so I held off as long as I could. If you've taken ultram or tramadol during the 1st trimester, don't worry yourself to death, chances are the baby is fine. Please ask your doctor for their advice/recommendation, it's extremely important they know. P

tramadol
I am in the same situation, I've been taking tramadol throughout my pregnancy without my doc knowing and I'm getting ready to deliver any day and I'm just nervous about the outcome. I take about 1-2 a day sometimes 3. Did your doctor know you were taking the medication?

Thank you for the information. It really scares me to think about my baby having seizures.

Tramadol is a synthetic, centrally acting, analgesic analogue of codeine that has the potential to cause physical dependence similar to, but much less, than that produced by opiates. Because of its low addiction potential, tramadol is not classified as a controlled substance. The drug is available only as an oral tablet in the United States but has been used both parenterally and rectally in other countries.
