Acetaminophen in dogs?

I see many posts regarding acetaminophen in dogs being toxic. However, this med has been recommended by my vet. I asked about using OTC, and he recommended a proper dosage. Where is all this information about it being toxic coming from? I know liver damage is a risk with OD or long term usage, but seems safe for short term. Most vet sites I found listed uses for it. Is this a controversial med? What are the risk factors?
My concerns stem partially from the fact that we have just moved and this vet is completely new to me, so I haven't had time to build up trust. They seem great, but I saw so many posts on it being toxic. I mostly wondered if anyone has sources that back up those posts which I can check out. Do you think it would be impolite to call my old long time vet and ask what he thinks?

You need to ask your vet. It's wrong to ask us to evaluate your vet's recommendation.

I use Ecotrin coated aspirin because that's what MY vet recommended, and we discussed why he recommended it.

Since you have questions, your vet needs to know so he can ease your concerns. That's part of what you pay him for. -!-

Acetaminophen is toxic to dogs in large doses. It is actually found to be more toxic to cats. But, the reason why warnings of acetaminophen toxicity are said for dogs is because people often give acetaminophen to their dogs without proper consultation with the vet, and they often get an overdose from it, especially when they give their dogs human acetaminophen medications.

So, as Nedra E says, you should talk to your vet about your concerns.

Thanks to all who posted. After speaking with my old trusted vet, I believe that acetaminophen IS safe and indicated for our dog. He explained the risks, and stated that I would have to give more than 7 times the prescribed dose to be at risk for toxicity. Thanks to everyone!
