cutting oxycontin in half is OK as long as it isn't crushed?
I want to verify what a Dr. told me as I have read many different things online but not from med. professionals. My Dr. said it is OK to cut oxycontin in half because the binding agent that causes time release is designed to obsorb at a certain rate. He said it is a type of glue or gum that breaks down slowly in the human body. He said crushing is dangerous as it increases to the maximum absorbtion because of exposed surface area of the medication. I have cut my pills and have felt no problem or difference. I have severe back & hip damage from years of sports & other injuries and opiates have given me the ability to work & function where I could not before. The only problem I face is increasd tolerance over time.

I have been told that it is ok to cut them but never crush them. As long as that outer coating has not been crushed, you should be fine.

Any cut or crushing will release too much medication. NOT a good idea.

Thank you for your replies. I think I should avoid doing both just to be sure.

Oxtcontin is a modified release tablet. The whole tablet is surrounded with a layer that controls the timing of release of the drug (normally releasing it slowly after a period of time), therefore if you cut it there will be a part of the tablet which is exposed and will be absorbed immediately.

So as others have said, its not a good idea to cut it in half. However if your doctor has advised you to do so and you tried it and haven't felt any adverse effects if might be ok.
