What would be the side effects from taking 400 mg Ibuprofen 2 to 3 times a day over several years?

This dosage was also perscribed by my doctor at 3 times a day every 8 hours....every day for severe back pain.
I have though stopped taking then now all together.

actually you can take ibuprofen 4 times a day at 6 hr interval (maximum dose of 1,200 mg per day). however, it is recommended that you take them only as needed. Taking ibuprofen, or any NSAIDs for that matter, for long periods of time can increase your risk for cardiovascular disease, gastric ulcers & bleeding.
