The "retard" part is just pretty much similar to the "extended release" or "sustained release" types drugs wherein there's a substance, usually an enteric coating, which delays the onset of action of the drug. So if the non-retard type of the drug starts acting at arounf 1 or 2 hours from taking the drug, the retard type would act after 4-6 hours. The advantage of retard type drugs is that with prolonged absorption of the drug in the GI tract, the effect is also longer & side effects are reduced.
