its GRAPEFRUIT Juice you should avoid ... not GRAPE Juice (grapefruit is that bitter fruit, grape juice islike purple and stuff).
The reason is that grapefruit juice contains two furanocoumarin compounds, namely bergamottin and 6',7'-dihydroxybergamottin. These chemicals inhibit the cyt P450 monoamineoxidase (MAO) CYP3A4 ...
In other words, grapefruit juice contains chemicals which inhibit monoamineoxidase metabolism of drug molecules (eg. xanax), and thus acts as an MAOI (monoamineoxidase inhibitor).
MAOIs can be dangerous as they prolong the lifetime of a drug molecule in your body before it is metabolized (broken down).
Essentially taking an MAOI can make a lower dose of a drug more potent, which some people purposely use to their advantage to increase the effects of a drug.
If you are on a high dose of a drug and take an MAOI though, you run the risk of serious overdosing problems.
You are fine to drink GRAPE juice, and if you are on a low dose of xanax you are probably fine to drink GRAPEFRUIT JUICE.
If however you take 2mg bars of xanax, DO NOT FUCKING drink grapefruit juice unless it is your wish to permanently fuck up your brain/memory.
Once again note that GRAPE JUICE and GRAPEFRUIT JUICE are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT drinks
