I have taken this medication and I am going to share my insight about the medication. I was prescribed buspirone as a supplement to stimulants and to aid with some other side effects.
The drugs effectiveness is effected by two things: the first being the time on the drug, the second being type. The first is important, the longer you are on the medication, the more stable you will become. Secondly, I noted the style of medication. The instant release, the sustained release, or the extended release.
As far as serious side effects, the one that gets the most publicity is the seizures. The seizure threshold is lowered an equivalent amount as other medications and over the counter cold medications and decongestants. Shockingly, most people do not know this, but the FDA does not require that be on the label, but the buspirone got attention because a previous formulation lowered the threshold more than the current formulation.
As far as alcohol, be aware that everyone is different. The majority of people who google this will get huge warnings of "Don't do it, massive seizures..." This is not totally true, it depends on your threshold and neurochemistry. Most people won't notice too much with a casual drink, but full-on black-out drinking will likely end in seizure; then again you may run that risk if you are not on the medication as alcohol can affect the seizure threshold. Alcohol is not a major problem, like I said, just feel the waters, or do not drink--it's your call.
