Antibiotics like penicillin works on the bacterial cell wall, particularly inhibiting the formation of peptidoglycan cross-links in the bacterial cell wall. This weakens the cell wall of the bacterium (in other words, the antibiotic causes cytolysis or death due to osmotic pressure). It doesn't matter whether it is to be taken by human or horses, the mechanism remains the same.
