Dog still having Seizures on Phenobarbital? Take to the ER?
Our boston terrier had seizures about once a month for the last 2 years (never on meds) and last night she had 10 within 12 hours. We took her to the vet at 8am this morning, put on IV, Pheno and we picked her up at 7pm and vet said no seizures during the time she was there. She is now home, had another dose of pheno, and has had 2 seizures in 4 hours. Should we wait this out for Pheno to kick in or take her to the ER? Thanks!
They did check blood work and it came back ok. I should add that she is 8 years old and only starting having these seizures in the last year. Last night being the worst we've seen. MRI was suggested but cost is high. Waiting to see if the Pheno works for her. We have someone watching her all night to see if she has another seizure tonight.

I'm sorry. You should go to the ER. She may need to be on a constant rate infusion of valium to control the siezures. Hopefully she can get through this. Are her phenobarb at therapeutic levels (checked with a blood test)--and when was the last time it was done? You may want to talk to your vet about adding more meds such as potassium bromide or levetiracetam (keppra).
