I've been on antidepressants for 5 years. I have never missed a dose and I'm never going to stop taking them.

Firstly, they're not as effective if you stop and then restart. And often you'll think you're fine and stop, only to find that you become depressed again. That's because the action of antidepressants is chemical, and they only 'fix' the problem as long as you take them.

Secondly, there are definite (and potentially dangerous) withdrawal effects from SSRIs and the other newer antidepressants. If you're considering stopping, consult the person that prescribed them first!

yes, I have been on them for 4 years now, they are called amtriptline and when I try to stop taking them they make me sweat, have cold shivers, I cannot eat, sleep, talk, concentrate so I have to stsrt taking them again. I saw my gp and he said it was all in my head, I then thought that till I read the side effects, listed on the leaflet was - hallucinations, insomnia, sickness, constipation, stomach problems, increased deppression lasting 4-5 weeks and many more. I wish I had not took them to start with. I am now on 100 mil per night and when I sleep, I do for 12 - 14 hours and miss appointments, work etc, I do hope this is not the case for you, maybe I am sensitive to them. Good luck.

been on them for 6 yrs due to a bad disease. Every so often I decide not to take them and with in a few weeks I am thinking about driving into a tree or drive and not turn back. I'll cry all the time and just not a happy or good person. So that is unsupervised by a Dr. If you feel fine with them don't go off cause you'll see the ugly side of depression.
