do antidepressants work?

ive been diegnosed with depression
but i hate seeing doctors so i just ignore the calls
and dont go to thereapy...i rather sleep
i dont feel like going


and ways do antidepressants work?
and first hand experience?
any alternate things i could do

yes they do if u are on the right ones. make sure you tell your dr. all side effects of the medicine and take it as prescribed.

antidepressents work if you actually need them. You can also exersize to lift your mood but if you are so depressed you can't get the motivation to see a doctor then chances are you aren't going to get the motivation to exersize.

I'm a 13-year-old girl who has been diagnosed with sever depression. I've been even hospitalized. Antidepressants work wonders for me. I love it. I suggest seeing a doctor (even if you hate it) and find one that works best for you. Personally, Zoloft is my favorite. I feel so much better. I can actually smile again.

Yes they do work if you need them. I have taken Lexapro for about 2 yrs and I have been a totally better person. Can't remember how my life was without them!

The [B]monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)[/B] were some of the first antidepressant medications developed. The neurotransmitters responsible for mood, primarily norepinephrine and serotonin, are also known as monoamines. Monoamine oxidase is an enzyme which breaks these substances down. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors, as the name implies, inhibits this enzyme, thus allowing a greater supply of these chemicals to remain available.

[B]Tricyclics[/B], also known as heterocyclics, came into broad use in the 1950's. These drugs inhibit the nerve cell's ability to reuptake serotonin and norepinephrine, thus allowing a greater amount of these two substances to be available for use by nerve cells.

[B]SSRI[/B] stands for [B]Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor[/B]. These medications work, as the name implies, by blocking the presynaptic serotonin transporter receptor. This drug differs from the tricyclics in that it's action is specific to serotonin only. It's effect on norepinephrine is indirect, through the fact that falling serotonin "permits" norepinephrine to fall so preserving serotonin preserves norepinephrine.
