has anyone had prenatal depression and taken antidepressants?
im 18 weeks and just been diagnosed, the doctor has given me prozac / fluoxetine, and im in two minds wether or not to take it, i know the doctor would not prescribe it if it wasnt safe, im just wondering if anyone has taken antidepressants during pregnancy and they have had a healthy baby or there was problems after the birth, thanks,

I was not diagnosed with prenatal depression, but after being diagnosed with postpartum depression, my psychiatrist thought that I had suffered from the depression during pregnancy as well. If your doctor prescribed you something, then I am sure they know it is safe for use during pregnancy, and I would take it. Your baby will be fine, happy, and healthy, and better off with a happy Mommy as well! Good luck!

I had postnatal depression, i chose not to go down the pill route but that's entirely down to the individual, i cant believe the doctor had prescribed you Prozac are you aware of the side effects??
And of course anything you put into your mouth goes straight into the growing body of your unborn child, so if you think that you can cope without taking medication i totally would if i were you, why cant you go and see a homepath, I'm 27 have 2 kids and one on the way and anything Ive got from them has always worked!! Good luck xx

If your doctor has prescribed it for you, you should start taking the medication. Most antidepressants do not cross the placenta and are therefore not harmful at all. You should still increase the amount of folic acid you are taking. However, you need to talk to your doctor about whether or not you can breastfeed - most antidepressants will be excreted in breast milk and are therefore not safe.

I am bipolar and at 5 wks, I cannot stop taking my antidepressants or the mood stabiliser, I cleared all of my meds with the doctor before I ttc'd.
