How long can people stay on antidepressants?
I have an anxiety disorder, and have been on an anti depressant for a month, and it's really great. But I worry about being taken off them.
Also, my boyfriend( on the net) is furious about me taking anything, he says I have to choose the meds or him, and he's serious. He is a big anti pyschiatric meds guy. Does not believe in them. I think I might have to lie to him and tell him I won't take them, but does it really matter?, he is half way around the world. But I don't want to lose him.

People can and do stay on antidepressants for many years. There are a lot of ignorant people out there who say that antidepressants are useless or actually harmful, but frankly, if you have a serious mental health problem it's actually more harmful to NOT take medication.

Medication is not, however, the only solution. I personally think that therapy is just as important.

Some people can get their mental health issues under control if they only take medications for a few months, or if they don't take them at all but do counseling/exercise/etc. regularly. It all varies from person to person, and nobody has the right to judge anyone else for taking medication.

My brother is a severely anti psych-meds guy, too. I've gotten him to accept the fact that I take an antidepressant by telling him that my experience shows that I would be pretty much non-functional without it. I also told him I understand that antidepressants and other medications are often overprescribed, and that they're not meant to be "happy pills," but to restore the natural balance of chemicals in the brain.

In any case, if your boyfriend is demanding that you choose between the meds and him, only you know what those medications do for you and what your life is like if you don't take them. It's not his place to tell you what to do. It's your body and your life, and there are plenty of guys out there who would accept--and respect--the fact that you are taking medications in order to be a more healthy and functional person.

what's more important your mental health or some guy across the world...suffering from anxiety is not to be taken lightly..and being on this medication is a good thing. You want to live a normal healthy life then I would continue to stay on the meds.

Some people take anti-depressants throughout their lifetimes. Others benefit from shorter term use (brief periods of time scattered throughout the lifetime). Regardless of how long you will require meds - your decision to take them should NOT be based on the ignorance of your online boyfriend.

This is not the type of man you want in your life (the type obnoxious enough to issue such a ludicrous ultimatum). If you must choose between your health and your boyfriend - the choice is clear: choose your health.

I have panic disorder and have been on lexapro for 3 months. at first, my husband didn't like it. i basically told HIM take it or leave it. he's fine with it now, as long as i'm happy. your doctor will probably keep you on the meds atleast 6 months, from what i understand. mine have no intentions of taking me off any time soon. i would ditch this guy, especially since you don't live near eachother. your happiness is all that matters.

lie then; ur helping urself get better and deal with life.. some people can't do it alone, and i certainly couldnt overcome depression or anxiety without my meds. What a jerk, i choose health over an internet relationship. A month is not nearly long enough to be on a chemical inducing/stimulating drug. I've been on anti-depressants for almost a year. It takes more than just the medicine to feel better, though, but it certainly is one heck of a boost.
This is a question for your doctor, and i can promise you he will not advise getting off an anti-anxiety drug after only 4 weeks.. it takes almost 3 weeks for some to kick in.

Your boyfriend (on the net) is a loser. Its none of his business what medications are prescribed to you. I hope you are confident enough in time to get a real life boyfriend and chose well.
