Do Antidepressants make you gain weight?
I see a psychiatrist soon. I'm on Ativan but my GP said he'll most likely put me on Lexapro or Zoloft. Do any of those make you gain weight?
I just lost like 30 lbs that I needed to lose and am now about 145lbs. I wouldn't want to gain the weight back because of a pill.
Years ago, I worked in Human services field and staff said some medications make you gain weight.

I've been on different antidepressants over the years, and some of them really packed on the pounds for me. However, the fact that I wasn't suicidally depressed made the 15 extra pounds worth it. Remeron was the worst for me. I gained almost 30 lbs on that drug, which I lost after stopping it.

When my wife was sick, she lost too much weight and wasn't eating well. She's gained back the weight she'd lost and is just trying to maintain it at this point. But I would say, that yes anti-depressants can lead to weight gain, perhaps because you're feeling better.

No. No pill or medication makes you gain weight. Some will just give you more of an appetite to make you eat more. If that happens don't binge on snack foods, but eat healthy stuff like veggies and fruits. You can also ask your psych to prescribe some medication to help you maintain your weight.

They could make you gain weight.

There is a tie between dopamine/seretonin levels and levels of hunger. Basically with some people, the happier they are the more apetite they have... So the pills may not directly make you gain weight, but indirectly, you might feel insreased happiness and feel like eating more...

Some people react differently to the chemicals that are being altered. It's possible that you will gain weight but it's also possible that nothing that will happen with your weight. Even if you do gain weight, it probably won't be very much weight.

About 30% of people who take lexapro gain weight. This isn't inherent in the drug itself, but in restoration of appetite in people who were depressed and not eating. Zoloft is known to cause weight gain in patients. Wellbutrin is known as the skinny, happy, sexy pill (you actually can lose weight on that antidepressant AND quit smoking!). Cymbalta also does not seem to cause weight gain. I've been changed to rimadol and WOW! Weight gain! Although I started out as a size 0...laugh. I'm up to a size 3 in just 1 month!

Antidepressants don't make you gain weight. But they do increase your appetite and make you want to eat more.

On Lexapro, studies show that up to 5% of users of the drug experience weight gain that's why it is suggested to keep a healthy diet while on the drug. As for Zoloft, there had been mixed feedbacks as to whether it causes weight gain or loss. It would be safe to say the results vary and if I were you, I'd get on a healthy diet just to be safe. For some patients, Zoloft can cause loss of appetite while for other patient, it does the opposite.
