Someone who needs anti-depressants may have to try several different meds before they find one which works. Also, the illness can be multiple. They can be for instance bipolar instead of just depressed. Different meds entirely. It is best to be in the care of a good shrink who knows their meds. A general practioner is definitely not as good.
Counselling can work if you have someone you really can talk with. If you dont' feel comfortable with one, you ask for another. That is very common and expected. It's no insult.
So hang in there, and get a doctor who specializes in such issues to prescribe the meds, and if they don't work, tell them. You must communicate with your doctor. It is very experimental with each person.
something which works well is lots of exercise. It creates hormones which make us happy.
Stay away from junk food. It gives your moods a real work out for nothing.
Hang around positive people. If they are always whining about something, find new friends. Be with those who are positive and supportive of you.
Keep your mind active. Get interested in something. Do it.
Good luck!
