HW HELP ! How do diuretics help reduce excess fluis in peritoneal cavity
A woman has alcoholic hepatitis, she is put on diuretics. How will diuretics reduce the excess fluid inher peritoneal cavity? Name and describe the mechanisms of action of three types of diuretics. Why is her diet salt restricted?

Diuretics act by working on the kidney and making it reabsorb less water, Sodium, Potassium, etc.

There are 3 main classes:

Thiazide: Thiazides work on the proximal part of the Distal Convoluted Tubule. They have a moderate effect, and work by reducing the Mean Arterial Blood Pressure through a currently unknown mechanism. This therefore helps in hypertension.

Loop: Loop diuretcs are the most powerful, and they work on the Ascending Loop of Henley. They strongly inhibit reabsorbtion of water and minerals, and therefore reduce the blood volume.

Potassium Sparing: K Sparing diuretics work on the Distal part of the Distal Convoluted Tubule. These work by inhibiting the reabsorption of Sodium and water but NOT Potassium, therefore helping to retain potassium levels.

In answer to how Loop Diuretics get rid of fluid in the peritoneal cavity, as they reduce the blood volume the extracellular fluid flows back into the blood vessels osmotically to help make up the blood volume to a normal level.

Her diet salt is restricted because too much salt can lead to hypertension and other undesirable side effects.

There are thiazide diuretics, loop diuretics, potassium sparing. I believe the loop diuretics are the most powerful. They make you pee pee to the bathroom a lot thus reducing excess fluid which in this case is in the peritoneal cavity. Salt makes you retain water. The salt particles attach to water. So this is why its salt restricted diet

Diuretics filter the blood forcefully, eliminate the waste through urination. Re-absorption of blood takes place and elimination of waste through (glomerular filtration, re-absorption from loop of Henley, distal & proximal convoluted tubule) different parts of the nephron. Due to forceful urination (pee), diuretic eliminates excessive fluid (not fluis) from the peritoneal cavity.

Thiazide diuretics, loop diuretics (frusemide a STRONG diuretic, eliminate all sodium, potassium & more. Extra potassium therapy is required) and potassium sparing diuretic (weak diuretic but retain potassium) act in different ways. Excessive salt intake - retain water (accumulation of fluid). So, physician advised salt restricted diet.
