why is it that calcium channel blockers dont have to be used forever
I am a 21 year old male diagnosed with heart palpitations. my heart doesnt race BUT it does beat hard enough for me to feel it from time to time. i was prescribed cardizem la.

my cardiologist told me that since my echocardiogram was normal, i should only have to take this medicine for 3-6 months. he said that is usually what he encounters. he usually doesnt see someone with a normal echocardiogram stay on the medicine for longer than 6 months.

why is this? what is the science behind this? do the calcium channel blockers re-train the heart to not use as much calcium so that it doesnt beat as forcefully? thus removing the palpitations?

i still have palpitations from time to time...which makes me think perhaps my dosage should be slightly higher?

I am too on cardizem 120mg. I still have palpitations every once in awhile and I having a racing heart. I am only 34 female and my Echo, stress and labs were normal. I told them about the paitations and they gave me a prescription for 180mg but, I have not started it. Do you ever get chest discomfort. Not like a heart attack but, it just pains sometimes? I told them about the pains and my cardiologist didn't seem too concern since I said it wasn't excrutiating or dull. Told me to take ibuprofun. I was never told I would only be on it for 6 months though. Hmm.. let me know if you find out anything. My Email is darkfairy73@yahoo.com
