Chemotherapy and acute renal failure -- what are the statistics?
Does anyone know what are the chances that cisplatin would cause permanent kidney damage, and the patient would need kidney dialysis onward? I already Googled this but found nothing to my satisfaction.
Cisplatin is documented to produce impairment of the kidneys but the extent of the damage depends on the body's reaction to it and its ability to cope with its effects. The chances it may end up this way may be after a single treatment, after several treatments, or even none at all. Your doctor would be able to give you a more accurate prognosis since he is familiar with the patient history. But you have to realize that to develop permanent renal failure is a risk associated with cisplatin and whatever predictions given still have a chance of being wrong.
