Chemotherapy destroys cancerous cells as well as normal, healthy cells. Some of those healthy cells that are destroyed are white blood cells, which are cells needed for fighting infections. When white blood cells are low, a condition called neutropenia, your body is vulnerable to infections.

Having patients taking chemotherapy is one way of preventing exposure to people who have a communicable disease such as colds, etc.
