While on chemotherapy, a patient's immune response is not as active as before. Chemotherapy destroys cancerous cells as well as normal, healthy cells. Some of those healthy cells that are destroyed are white blood cells, which are cells needed for fighting infections. When white blood cells are low, a condition called neutropenia, the body is vulnerable to infections such as coughs & colds.
To prevent your wife from catching any more diseases, avoid interaction with people known to have communicable disease, such as the common cold, etc.
