Methotrexate and general anesthesia
I have just started methotrexate last week, lowest dosage. I had to start because of my rheumatoid arthritis suddenly started getting much worse after having taken Plaquenil successfully for several years.

Previously, I was scheduled to go under general anesthesia for surgery on an unrelated problem. My question is, will there be greater risk of infection because of the Methotrexate?

Methotrexate is know to affect the immune system, making the risk of developing an infection higher. However, as long as care and proper sanitation is practiced during the surgery, I do not see you having any problems with it. Just make sure that you have informed the doctors of your medications and are careful with yourself after your surgery. Unless of course your blood count is low and there is a reason for you to be concerned on your risk of developing an infection.

Hope this helps.
