During the first month of my pregnancy I took sulfasalazine 500 mg for almost 20 days. After realizing that I have conceived, I stopped the medication. I had also taken a NSAID along with sulfasalazine. Will it harm my baby? If anyone is here with the knowledge/experience on this, please guide me. Though the doctor says we have to wait and see.
Sulfasalazine was given Pregnancy Category B which means that in it doesn't seem to affect babies when used in animal studies. There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
A study among 1455 pregnancies associated with exposure to sulfonamides including sulfasalazine, indicated that this group of drugs did not appear to be associated with fetal malformation.
