How dangerous is an ambien overdose

I just found my best friend passed out with an empty bottle of ambien next to him. I don't know how many he took, but I know that he was prescribed 10mg tablets. I've taken him to the hospital, and done a little research online on ambien overdoses, and I'm getting really worried. It sounds like an overdose on this drug can be fatal. I don't know how much time passed between when he overdosed and when I got him to the emergency room. I'm really scared that he's going to die, and I would like to know how much ambien would provide a decent risk of death for him, I may be able to figure out how much he took. If it makes any difference, he is male, 20 years old, about 5'6" and around 130 lbs. He has been depressed for a while, and I know he hasn't eaten for a couple of days.

From what I know, Ambien is designed to help you sleep. He may have been passed out because of the amount of sleeping pills in his system. Of course, taking too many pills at once can always lead a risk of fatal overdose. Too many pills of any type of medication is NOT good by any means. For now, I recommend you sit tight, and calm your nerves. I feel for you during this time, and hope everything turns out well. After this episode is over you should help your friend find some type of counseling or help.
