What is the difference between Ambien and Ambien CR? I know that one is is a controlled release pill.

But, what is the difference? Are they under the same drug category? Which do you prefer for sleeping? I ask because I've taken Ambien on and off for years and it has always worked wonderfully for me. I've never tried Ambien CR and was just curious about it. Also, how are drugs like Lunesta and Soma compare to Ambien? ( I'm not thinking about using them, I'm more or less being nosy about them.)
