    Default Looking for a med that can help me sleep 12+ hrs

    Hi, Newbie Alert, and i apologise if this is better answered in a more appropriate forum.

    Some times I need a med that can help me sleep around 12+ hours.

    My GP disagrees i need this much sleep, but I feel i need what i need, its for just occasional situations I find myself feeling, any recommendations for an appropriate med?

    @Itza

    Welcome to the forum! Long time Ambien (zolpidem) user here so I know you don't wanna go that route if it's 12+ hours you require. Just as a general suggestion, I would recommend Restoril (temazepam), nitrazepam, or a longer-acting benzodiazepine in general. You pretty much want to stay away from all Z drugs (Ambien, Sonata, Lunesta) and Halcion (triazolam)---half-lives way too short to be of use to you.

    Remeron (mitazipine) 7.5mg
    Desyrel (trazodone) 50-100mg
    are sedating antidepressants commonly prescribed for sleep/insomnia and a non-controlled (scheduled) option.

    Just my two cents. The site is jam-packed with helpful folks and helpful info. Think you'll find you're in good company.

    I take 100mg doxepin and 60mg temezapam every night and I could sleep over eight hours most likely if I wanted. If I really want to sleep in later I will just take some of my xanax with it and that really puts me outs.

    why would anyone have to knock themselves out for 12 hours? If it's catch-up sleep you'd probably just naturally stay knocked out.
    I sleep really heavily in the winter but it's not refreshing sleep. Might help if you expanded on the type of situation you are wanting to sleep that long for.
    Depending on other meds that you take, amitryptiline is an old-school sedating anti depressant. I can take quite a lot of it without falling asleep because my body is used to anti-depressants, but I know of at least two other people who have been prescribed small amounts to induce sleep and they basically knocked out for 12+ hours, one of them missing a full day's work the next day!

    Just to note some of the sleeping meds I have tried are ambien, remerom, trazadone, xanax, klonopin, temezapam, ativan, sonata and a bunch of over the counter meds like melatonin, nyquil and all the other over the counter ones. Try asking your doctor for one of these and see what he says. Some might not benefit you since they don't last long but I don't know of any sleeping pill designed for 12 hours of sleep.

    @Itzalah

    Seroquel my friend. 25-50 mg guaranteed to knock you out for 12 hours!

    You'll feel a little out of it the next day, but it will put you out for sure.

    Nozinan is another (older) anti-psychotic that works very well for sleep too! Rarely prescribed any more, but it will give you a nice long sleep.

    If you're going to try the Ambien route, make sure you get Ambien CR. The coating on the CR is supposed to keep you asleep longer.

    @abone777 @Itzalah I only have a fair amount of second hand knowledge on seroquel, and yes those who have used it said it knocked them out for 12or so hours. Tooerance will build and your doc will increase your does, I guess it might be a woth trying/usinng if your not looking for a nightly 12 hours....that sseems like akot of sleep unless you are in a physical.mentak recobery of some sort.

    The main thing you have to be worried about with Seroquel are side effects.

    Read the product monograph, you may want to weigh the options as to whether the side effects are worth taking the drug just to sleep.

    I know a number of people who take it daily with no problems. I can't take it myself; way too many side effects.

    Hey thanks for the suggestion, i had a friend prescribed seroquel and tried one of theirs (a few years ago now), it sure knocked me out, but messed with my head for most of the next day, felt as though it was decreasing my reaction time to things (most noticible when driving). I dont think its the solution for me.

    @Itzalah Good point, I forgot about that part (being spacey, out of it, whatever) the next day even after the "12 hours of sleep". I do not know from personal experience, but know two people fairly well that had the same effects but they were were only on it for about a month each....this was from about a year ago, and I totally forgot about them mentioning that since I did not see that every day. I guess if you go on it it as a "mainteneance med the efffect goes away (or you get used to being a space cadet), but then you probably also loose the "12 hour sleep" effect. Good luck in finding your solution.

    @Itzalah, I agree with @jabone747. Seroquel dose of .25-50 mg guaranteed to knock you out. This is an off-label use of Seroquel. The first few days up to a week you will fee a hangover feeling. It should go away as your body adjust. The primary side effect is weight gain, but keep in mind the usual dose for what it is designed for is 300mg to 600 mg.

    Weight gain at doses of 25mg to 50 mg should not be an issue. I disagree with the poster about tolerance build up. I have been on Seroquel 50mg for close to three years for insomnia and the efficacy remains the same. I have seen no tolerance build up.

    After trying most of the prescribed insomnia medications with little effect, my doc said it's time to "break out the big guns." My doc was not kidding. Finally able to sleep after years of insomnia. I do believe Seroquel will be prescribed but only after the standard insomnia medications fail.

    Hi@Itzalah If you want to stay asleep for 12+ hours, I would make the following recommendations: Ambien CR in lieu of Ambien is a better bet because it's time released and has little hangover effect. Additionally, of the benzos, you would want to use something with a relatively long half life such as clonazepam(Klonopin) .This will stay in your system up to 36 hours depending on a great many factors. The good: It will likely help you sleep longer than Ambien or benzos such as Xanax, Ativan, Restoril, Valium. The Bad: Hangover effect depending on dosage and it's onset can take some time, so you might want to take it 2 hours prior to wanting sleep. In my experience, clonazepam will keep you asleep longer but takes quite a while to kick in, so to speak. This may just be my personal experience because Micromedex reports that the onset of action for clonazepam is 30 minutes. Additionally, I find that if I take 50MG of diphenhydramine (OTC Benadryl) 30 minutes before bedtime but 2 hours after taking clonazepam, I can fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep longer. Sweet dreams!

    I took two diazepam and a 10mg amitriptyline last night and woke up feeling pretty refreshed after 6 hours sleep...I would recommend a higher dose of amitriptyline - possibly 25-50mg - for a full 12 hours, they make you feel groggy to begin with but I have no side affects any more.

    I've personally taken 300 mg of seroquel, kava and valerian at once and stayed up all night. I might have to get some of those sleep benzos from S**z next time, but I'm turning into a damn pharmacy as it is over here. Insomnia sucks. Seroquel and pot leads to horrible munchies.
