Can someone translate this medical drug dosage: Nembutal gr. XX
With my understanding the X is roman numeral for ten hence the desired dose is for 20 grains of Nembutal. Trying to determine if I am wrong or my NCLEX review guide is. Thanks.
As previously stated, this is the old system of weighing. Also, as you have already stated, the XX is the roman numeral for 20, as each X is equal to 10 units.
The gr. unit stands for grains. 1 grain is equivalent to 64.8 mg, so the 20 grains (XX gr.) of Nembutal is equal to 1296 mg.
This is found by using dimensional analysis to convert the units, which i'm sure you know how to do.
This is the old measure of drug dosages, the apothecary system. It has been largely replaced by metric measure, milligrams (mg). It was always marked in roman numerals, XX being 20 grains or 1300 mg.
