Stop the beer, not the medication. Metoprolol does a few things. It even out the heart rate, lowers the blood pressure, and decreases the work load, or oxygen demand on the heart. If beer causes the symptoms you are describing, then stop drinking it. For you health's sake at least.

Irregular beats, and fast heart rate? That goes with a number
of heart conditions, and irregularities of rhythm. How has your blood
pressure been? Any shortness of breath? Did they say you simply had palpitations and irregular heart beats, or was there a name
given your condition. You are completely right re being concerned about mixing
alcohol with medication. Only four beers is not a few with medication.
Beer is an alcoholic beverage. It is good that you recognize that. Some
people do not; You are recommended to not stop this drug suddenly.
It could be dangerous. I would think it would not be wise to
mix alcohol with it, certainly not four beers. You
need to consult your prescibing health care
provider about this, about whether you should skip it or not.
Also, if there is diabetes in your family, you need to have your
blood sugar checked with this drug it can mask blood sugar problems.
