metropolol (Lopressor, Toprol) has numerous side effects, including nightmares. There's also this thing called "beta blocker blues" characterized by mood swings, depression, memory loss, etc. you can ask your doctor for alternatives to this drug.

I took Toprol XL (Metoprolol) for 8 years and didn't have any nightmares at all. Now I have been switched to Toprol Tartrate (Lopressor) and have them all of the time. Very vivid and bizzare dreams. I cannot go back to the XL because the Generic is currently not being manufactured and the Generic of Lopressor is. If you can afford it you may want to ask for the "XL" version and see if the slower metabolizing version helps.
