Yes, absolutely. Drugs like this are very destructive to the body. Yes, they generate a reaction and accomplish slowing your heart rate down, reducing blood pressure, etc., but have you ever in your entire life known anyone to be deficient in any drug? I haven't.
You need to continue to work with your doctor and take his advise, but I would also do your own investigation into other ways to make your body healthy. Doctors are NOT the people to ask how to make you healthy, they treat symptoms with drugs and surgery, not nutrition. Yes, we get old and it's very common for people to say, "I'm getting old and falling apart." That simply does not have to happen. You can be healthy, but it's certainly not easy in America today. It's even harder to find the truth about what to eat and not eat, how to take care of your body, etc.
If you examine cultures in the world that do not have the problems we experience in the so called "modern world," you will begin to find some of the answers. I suggest to you that you look at the results of what modern medicine has done for us and then look at primitive man that did not have cavities, perfect jaw formations, a great resistance to disease and then look at the 2005 CDC report that 53% of ALL Americans are chronically ill, when in 1905, the same CDC report showed less than 5% of ALL Americans were chronically ill. Does that sound like progress to you?
I remember being in grade school and there was one overweight guy in the class that everyone made fun of. Today, they are making fun of the skinny people. Does that sound like progress?
In 1905, we ate lots of lard, real butter, raw milk, fermented foods, and there were no hydrogenated oils, margarines, sodas, processed foods, vegetable oils, etc.
A very good book for you to read, if you truly care about your health is, "Nourishing Traditions" by Sally Fallon and Mary G. Enig, Ph.D. This book is a cook book as well as an informational book that will give you some incite into what kinds of foods you should be eating. I would also highly recommend you see a Certified Nutritional Therapist and learn what nutrients you are deficient in and to get a good diet recommendation. Educate yourself on what is good and bad, don't just take the opinions of those that don't really understand how the body works nutritionally.
good luck to you
