Question for those who use an Albuterol inhaler..
I have seasonal asthma and have been using an Albuterol inhaler for the past year and a half. I understand that Albuterol is a steroid that your body can become accustomed to if you use it often enough. I was wondering if any of you have ever experienced any side effects while using Albuterol? Mood swings? Stomach upsets? Weight loss/gain, etc. Thanks!

Albuterol not a steroid
Albuterol is not a steroid. It's actually a muscle relaxant.
I have used steroid inhalers periodically for years and never noticed any steroid like effects like what we get from Prednisone which is commonly prescribed for asthma.
The only obvious dangers from the steroid inhalers (unless you are particularly sensitive) is a lowering of the immune response to the areas the spray comes into contact with which can cause an infection in your mouth. This has happened to me when I forgot to rinse. Your doctor will tell you to rinse your mouth out and spit directly after use.

Thank you everyone for giving some information about Albuterol. I'm glad to know it's quiet safe to take it even long term.

Albuterol is not a Steroid this is correct. It is has smooth muscle relaxing tendencies but is classified as a broncho dialator or Alpha Stimulant with the addition of a Beta receptor response causing said effects and a rapid heart rate (chrono topic and ino tropic effects / i.e. increase in contractility and rate of your heart). Keep in mind most Albuterol Nebulizers in both Hospital and pre-Hosptial (Ambulances) settings, the mixture is Albuterol and a Steroid (Ipatopium Brohmide is most common) . p.s. I have no spell check sorry!
