try to concentrate on slowing down your breathing and getting deeper breaths eventually. The more excited you get the worse it would be, so just concentrate on slowing down and relaxing. Stay calm and relax. I have seen this work for a friend of mine that has bad breathing problems. Just don't panic and know that if you absolutely have to you can call 911 (if you aren't alone try to get the person you're with to help you).

Don't mess around with this. People die from Asthma. You need Albuertol inhaler with spacer for rescue treamtent, maintenence therpy with an inhaled corticosteroid, and right now you probably also need a course of prednisone. If asthma is not managed proactively and continuously then this will keep happening to you. go to the ER if you are having difficulty breathing.

yes,ive had asthma my whole life.all my kids have it too.coffee is what works best.really strong hot cofee ,the caff.opens up your airways like the inhaler does.also if you have no presc.you can go to walgreens or any drugstore and buy a primatine mist inhaler.they work just as good,i almost like it better than my albuterol.

OMG. until i checked the date of the post.
i am a planner, but feel every home, should have benadryl for allergic reactions, amoxi for infections, inhaler, prednisone also will help breathing, soma, codeine. few other basics. lasix. bronkaid ain't bad for emergency breathing either. it is OTC, but one must sign and show driver license and dea keeps track of it. but, not if u don't know ur physicians desk reference inside out.
in the absence of all of the above, u force urself to breath. deeply. in and out. 10 times. cuz, frankly, it sounded more like a panic attack bred from fear or anxiety. if u were air-hungry, u could not have typed that full sentence.
so, did u live, btw? it was a post from 2008, people. whew. and thank u for the coffee tip. i did not know that. i don't drink coffee. i have my emergency caffeine pills. vivarin. they allegedly help take down swelling from arthritis as well.
don't ever be caught unawares, at the mercy of a doctor or hospital or lack of knowledge.
be prepared all. air hunger is awful. (and u can save another's life if u carry benadryl and administer if they get stung by bee and have reaction.) always be prepared.

Ephedrine is another option (Bronkaid or Primatene tabs), available without a prescription but behind the counter. Won't work as fast as an inhaler, though.

this isnt something you want to play around with. go see a doctor and get the right inhalator.

ive used primatene inhaler for maybe 20 years. unfortunately, they will end manufacturing it at the end of 2011. i called the company a few mos ago and they wouldnt say what if anything would be replacing it. i never see bronchaide inhalers where i live. ill have to look into that and see if it will be available on amazon or will stock up on primatene. everyone is on prescription asthma meds these days, i am happy old school, and dont fill my asthma scripts. of course i dont have get to the hospital severity, but close to it when i was a kid, and still a seasonal problem.
