Default What is your ideal pain medication?

I was wondering what everyones preferable medication for chronic pain. After the reformations of oxycontin and soon to be opana I was wondering what people are going to now for their chronic pain issues. The last time I was in pain management I was receiving 60mg ms-contins and 4 mg dilaudids. I suffer from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. That was a pretty effective combonation. Right now I'm doing the 8mg subutex + 10mg valium.
Not as near as good for chronic pain but allows me to live a much more productive lifestyle.

The only thing that helps me is Loratab. But that is the only thing I an get the doctor to prescribe. I never, ever overuse and I am prescribed four (4) a day. It doesn't help that much, but a least a little.

I use codeine, less addiction potential, I'd rather have a little pain than face w/d's again.

@redman I would love some dilaudids I have lower back issues with leg pain, what works is a norco at night, with maybe a half extra if it gets worse... I don't think I let my PM doc know how much it hurts, but if he prescribed oxy I'd probably sleep better at night. It's tough now but I can't take anything non OTC during they day because I watch my daughter... By days end that norco comes in handy.

@nopizza I find dilaudids most effective. There one of the few strong pain meds that if taken orally doesn't mess me up too bad but still offers relief. Unfortuantly for most doctors Dilaudid is a dirty word... I was lucky to have a good doctor who understood what i was going through.

I used to get kidney stones (talk about pain omfg!!) and they would give me those to try to keep me out of the ER. Not as effective as IV, but not too shabby. I remember the doc sayin take 1 every 15 minutes until you don't feel anymore... (don't actually do that anyone). You're right though I am sure if anyone went to doc and said hey how bout some dilaudid they would get chuckled right out the door, in many instances.

This may be a silly question, but Dilaudid is stronger than Morphine, yes? Or no?

Thanks. How would you say Oxycodone and Hydrocodone differ? Say, if doses were set for equal "potency".

    @mmille42

Oxy makes me feel very loaded for lack of a better word; effective at numbing mind so less noticeable of pain. Hydrocodone is like a step down from that; I can function while taking vicodin or norco, if i need to, but am less bothered by pain. Hydromorphone, (dilaudid), made me feel less pain in a better way then oxy, but I was more able to have a conversation.

The ceiling on how much hydromorphone I took never seemed to be reached. If I took a lot (still within prescripted measures) I would basically just get very sleepy, happy, etc, and go to sleep. It is very powerful; this is all completely subjective, but I would say that the dosing was more linear; I hurt, so I took another. Still hurt, took another. Pain faded a bit, but still there, took another; felt ok for 3 hours or so.

The same interaction with OC would be hurt, took one... waited a bit still hurt, took another, got wretchedly sick and just totally loaded feeling at the same time... none of what i am typing here should be taken as dosage advice, how to use, or anything. I am simply relating my experiences.

All this was for kidney stones; hydrocodone (Vicodin or Norco) would have been completely useless for that- by far the most painful experience I have ever had...

If anyone wants more info on Dilaudid / Hydromorphone here is the Wiiki link:

    h**p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydromorphone

Hope this helps. I am glad that I don't really have to take oxy or dilaudid- they are highly addicting for me anyways, i stick to norcos for my back which generally does the trick so I can sleep at night.

As much liquid oxycodone as I want would be ideal for me.... Since that's a dream though, I'd be happy to get my tabs back.....Pure powder hydromorphone was cool to. I wish an email source like that would come around again.

For me, Oxy and hydro will amp me up for a couple hours in a good way. Dialudid does not do that to me. It is extremely effective at killing pain, but does make me sleepy and does not give me that "warm energetic" feeling. Watson 10/325's really pack the warm fuzzy energy for a couple hours.

And I am strictly speaking from taking pill form orally. Different methods of administration yield different results with dilaudid (snorting, injecting).

A friend of mine says eating dilaudid is simply "wasting it".

I am sure others have different opinions as these substances react differently for everyone.

@brandon7467 Pure powder hydromorphone!?! I've never heard of such a thing. So it would be just the hydromorphone no fillers ect.? Sounds good but dangerous.

One of my ((favorites is MS Contin.)
During my residency (I'm old) it was easy to find people (hospital employees) hooking themselves up to pumps. Especially after they starting using Fentanly for anesthesia.

    Laws have changed since then.

For me it's codeine because it's the least harmful to my body and is effective as well as dhc and it's not so over powering when you start to detox . BUT if I didn't care about my health here is what I would do . Crush up 30 mg of oxycodone with the a pap and mix in1 mg of Xanax it would look like pez lol I would snort it up one nostrils then chase it will a 6 pack or a few stiff drinks . This combo will take away any pain that life can throw at me .but I can't do that in reality because its a fast way to addiction sickness so I will stick to my minimums .
