Corticosteroids?
My horse recently got a steroid injection in his back because of inflammation and some erosion on one of his vertebrae. What exactly does the steroid injection do?

It erodes the spinal vertebrae away, then it spreads until the horse has no bones, then it is extremely flexible!

Just kidding, I have no idea. My eye doctor gave me some steroid eye drops to reduce inflammation.

Corticosteroids are a class of steroid hormones that are produced in the adrenal cortex. Corticosteroids are involved in a wide range of physiologic systems such as stress response, immune response and regulation of inflammation, carbohydrate metabolism, protein catabolism, blood electrolyte levels, and behavior.

It will just basically keep the inflammation from continuing and progressing so that it will relieve some of the pain that your horse is experiencing. After the inflammation has subsided, then they may try to correct the erosion on the vertebrae through surgery or other non-invasive methods.
