Regarding stress and weight gain with cortisone, this is what happens: When something stressful occurs, fat is broken down to be distributed throughout the body to supply it with energy. It does suppress our appetite at some point in time but eventually regain it replace whatever carbohydrates or fat we've supposedly lost while acting on that particular stressful event. The problem is most of the time, we don't really deal with stress physically so we don't get to burn any fat in the progress yet afterwards, we still feel the need to eat.
Now with regards to cortisone, studies show that this substance is associated with increased appetite & sugar cravings eventually causing weight gain. To add to that, it also slows our metabolism.
There are lots of physical stress management activities like yoga and tai-chi. You might want to try that if you're the type who's prone to stress.
