if a doctor prescribes you metformin hcl does that mean u necessarily have diabetes

a doctor prescribed me it a while back (when i took it, it tended to make me feel nauseous all the time. i ended up going to another doctor who took a blood test and he said i did not have diabetes... but he wanted me to keep taking the medicine but in a smaller dose. is there a reason for this?
