Metformin and me - how did it affect you
I've been put on Metformin for PCOS. I feel absolutely awful....tired, no appetite and very depressed, I'm thirsty all the time, very tired and I've not lost any weight yet!! I've just got to my target dose of 500mg three times daily. Anybody else had any of these symptoms? I've had a look on the net, and it does say the symptoms will pass, but I wonder how many of my complaints are related to the medication, or am I just a miserable, tired cow!!

Have you spoken to your GP as it sounds very much to me as though this drug does not suit you. I had the same thing with a High blood pressure tablet at the week-end and I thought I was dying. I did not get to speak to my GP until after the hols when he told me stop taking them at once.

Please do not suffer in silence. What suits one person does not necessarily suit another. So speak to a doctor or contact NHS Direct of you can't get hold of your doctor.

I take 500mg Metformin, one time a day for diabetes. It really helped me lose weight and seems to be controlling my diabetes type 2. It doesn't make me tired at all. It didn't interfere with my mood.

I take 2000mg of Metformin daily for PCOS. I have been on Metformin for several years. The side effects really do go away after a time, though I have not lost any weight as a result of the medication.
You are NOT just a miserable, tired cow! This medication can really mess with you while you are adjusting to it. I recommend adding excercise to your daily schedule, because it will boost your energy and aid in weight loss. I know that's the last thing you feel like doing right now, I remember how tired I was when I started the meds. But force yourself to get up and do something....vacuum, walk, stretches, whatever you are most comfortable with. I promise you'll feel better.

Nausea on metformin is common as your doctor had a duty to warn you. Good news it usually resolves after about 2 weeks, but may restart each time you increase the dose. Bad news weight loss due to metformin alone is very marginal. Like everyone else if that is one of your aims you also need to diet and increase exercise.
