question about metformin and pcos
i just recently found out that i have pcos (polycystic ovarian syndrome), and i have had symptoms such as acne, oily skin, dandruff, irregular periods , and hairloss (ive lost about a 1/4th of my hair in the last six months ) anyways my doctor is putting me on metformin, which is supposed to reduce symptoms, but ive been doing a lot of research on blogs and such, and it seems to me that many women complain of hair loss after starting metformin.... will i start having more hair loss?? or will it really reduce the hair loss, as it is a symptom of pcos?? thank you!!!!

I have been suffering from PCOS since I found out about 10 years ago. My doctor did put me on metformin to help the the symptoms of the disorder. The hair loss some women experience is one of the many symptoms of the disorder. I do not have this problem but I know it is caused by the hormonal imbalances that PCOS can cause in women. You should not lose more hair while on this medication it should even it out. You do lose about 100-150 strands of hair a day normally but if you still are having concerns and problems consult with your doctor. Metformin will also help you start to lose weight if your PCOS has caused weight gain(like mine did as well as diabetes.) So not only will metformin with your symptoms of PCOS( weight gain, irregular periods, diabetic control, and it can help if you decide to have children by lessening the imbalances of hormones if taken with infertility drugs.) it will start to help you feel better. It has made a difference in my case but I realize every one is different. Hope you can find the right combination for you.

Most medications have individual effects on each person. But generally, taking Metformin may halt the hair loss since this can regulate the hormones in your body. However, should hair loss be present, it won't be as much.

Hope this helps
