Can I Get On Metformin In Hopes Of Trying To Conceive With PCOS If I'm Not Married
Ok right now I'm uninsured, but that should change by the end of the year. I'm not married, but I have a boyfriend and we both want children. Neither of us has any kids right now.

I was diagnosed with PCOS and not given any medications because the free clinic I went to said I should just excercise to get my period back. My LMP was November 2008.

Once I get insurance do I need to be married to get on Metformin which will regulate my period? Do I need to get married to get on Clomid also if it comes to that?

My boyfriend and I both have regular jobs and I'm an expert in raising children. I'm 21 and he's 20.

Seriously if a doctor refused Clomid or Metformin (considering you would actually need it) because you're not married that would be a lawsuit and a half. This is 2009. Doctors don't care if you're married while you're trying to have children. Unless they're way too old fashioned then in that case its probably about time for them to retire anyways.

ALSO --- Just because you're not married does not mean you can not provide a loving household and supportive future. Not everyone wants to get married and that's perfectly fine.

Getting married has nothing to do with whether or not you get on metformin or clomid. It does however, have everything to do with providing a stable household for your future children. If you are willing to commit to having children, why can't you commit to each other?

As far as PCOS...I also have PCOS. I have recently fallen pregnant as well. I tried metformin for a few months, but it made me so sick I didn't want to stay on it. Instead I took Evening Primrose Oil capsules to help my body better regulate hormones and get my ovulation back on track without any side effects other than feeling a million times better. (I bought mine from puritan.com--great supplement/vitamin source). Make sure you're taking omega's 3,6,9 either through diet (walnuts, fish) or supplements. I pray you both understand the need to join in union before you bring children into the world.

You just need to see a doctor, and get the prescription. It is relatively inexpensive med. Age, married or not, or whatever else, doesn't matter as long as you have been diagnosed with PCOS.

If your LMP was back in Nov 2008, then you may need provera to reset/induce period as well, so ask for that as well.

First try metformin for few months and see if that brings cycle back to more normal (it can work depending on severity). Also do the exercise and low-carb diet as that will have similar impact as metformin. Fertility meds such as clomid is the next step but need to continue taking metformin during this.

Good luck.

Metformin is not a fertility drug nor will it regulate your period. Metformin is used to treat the insulin resistance (pre-diabetic) condition that often affects women with PCOS. Whether you are married or not has no bearing on the use of Metformin. You may want to wait until you have insurance and get a second opinion on your PCOS and the proper treatment as it sounds like the free clinic is not terribly knowledgeable about it. Exercise will not likely have any affect on your periods. For women with PCOS they often do not have regular periods unless they are on birth control pills. My middle daughter is 24 years old. She was diagnosed with PCOS about 18 months ago. She has been on Metformin and birth control pills since then. She is not married nor is she trying to get pregnant at this time. She did not have insurance at the time of her diagnosis but she still went on medication, which we helped her buy. She is now on an insurance that is through our county for people with no insurance and low income. They cover the cost of her medications. It doesn't matter much to the doctor if you are married or not or even if you have a job or not. What he/she will be most concerned about is getting you correctly diagnosed and prescribing medications that will help your condition. If you aren't successful in conceiving than you will probably be refered to a fertility specialist who can decide whether Clomid is your best option or not. Look into other health care options as well as other ways to get health insurance. Then, find a doctor who has some experience with treating woman with PCOS. Depending on the severity of your case, you may have other options available to you.
