How Do I Convinced My GYN To Put Me On Metformin For My PCOS
I'm not on any medications, but would like very much to go on Metformin to restore my menstrual cycles since I haven't had one since November 2008.

I was just diagnosed in May 2009 and they told me to keep dieting and exercising and if nothing changed to come back in November to get on meds. Thing is I've been exercising since April and still no period.

Usually it doesn't take this long to kick it. That's why I want Metformin, but I'm not sure what I should do if they refuse to give it to me. I've never had blood work done, but my symptoms are pretty obvious (obesity, excess hair, dark patches of skin, prior sleep apnea, upper thigh acne).

Any advice?

First, are you sure you want to be on Metformin (glucophage)? I have PCOS and was on it for more than a year and YES, I lost weight- but I gained SEVERE diarrhea, a weird smell when urinating and other not-so-pleasant side effects of the medications. Be sure that you get an ultrasound to show your polycistic ovaries too. That should do the trick. Even with no exercise at all (i just did weight watchers) I was smaller than I have ever been on the Metformin. Good luck. For me, the benefits were NOT worth it. SEVERE diarrhea!!!! The worst!

Give it til November like they've already said. It's only a few weeks since April.

Relax... sometimes the body doesn't need more stress to function normally and give you regular periods. If your doctor won't give you metformin, they may have a valid reason for it. Just keep on your exercise and diet regimen to achieve a balance in hormones, which is basically the action of metformin. If you can do it through exercise, why go through the expense and side effects of taking Metformin.

Hope this helps...
