Why don't you go see your doctor? Tell him you can't focus and think you might have ADD.
I recently had a F2F with my doctor and ended up getting prescribed Adderall 10's twice a day. Simply tell him/her your symptoms. I told him I had a really hard time maintaining my focus when I study (I'm a college student) and because of that it usually took me nearly twice as long to finish my homework/study. I told him I rarely saw things through because I got distracted and lost interest (this happens a lot to me when playing video games, watching tv, movies, things like that). I also told him I had trouble paying attention to my professors and even when all I wanted to do was pay attention (to pass the dreaded classes) my mind wandered off without me even noticing... After we talked he told me I had ADD inattentive and prescribed me the Adderall.

I never have asked for this medicine but I bet it would help with the terrible concentration I have due to the pain I suffer in my hip. I may be doing more research on this subject and cornering my doctor about it.

Does doing a F2F work with a doctor you've never visited before? I don't think my current doctor would prescribe me anything regardless of what I told him. I share many of the ADD symptoms described by Yiyo, but I'd rather switch doctors than keep going to the one I have.
It's all about how you present yourself. If you truly have the symptoms then describe them in detail and ask what he recommends you do. Don't walk in there and say "I have ADD and would like to be prescribed Adderall". He will label this as "drug seeking behavior" and kick you out.

Try a psychiatrist. Much more familiar with ADHD/ADD, much more familiar and comfortable with the meds out there, and will help you create a complete plan of attack. Personally, I'd never let a GP prescribe psych meds to me--they just don't have the training to properly diagnose and help you find the med that works for you.

I agree with @eagleweasel. I think a psychiatrist would be more comfortable diagnosing ADHD/ADD and giving you the pills you need. They should have a lot more experience diagnosing the disorder and should be more lenient in prescribing treatment.
is it very expensive to see a physcologist? I have no insurance and heard its very expensive or is it about the same a seeing a regular dr??
Where I used to go you get the initial prescription but have to start seeing a shrink to keep receiving the medication. My insurance did not cover seeing a psychologist it so I had to stop taking the medicine or pay the shrink out of pocket. I know some doctor's do prescribe it but I can't find one in my area. It's way too risky and illegal to obtain online in my opinion. Wish I had good insurance.

very expensive with insurance too....my old insurance wouldnt cover this, and ending up costing me 250$ per visit, wtf...thats alotta geness...
My current insurance wants will reimburse 70% of the rate, which is very generous...but, i have to submit a 1page form for every third visit, small inconvinence for a reimbursement.

And if someone gave you a pile of gold, you'd probably complain that it was too heavy.
Thats me adult ADHD... I have been this way all my life and finally diagnosed at 36. I am now 39... and i havent taken my adderall in over 9 months because of loosing my job and my insurance....
I went to a psychiatrist to get diagnosed and then started using a family doctor. If you have records from your psych then it's all good... If you don't then some will not prescribe until you see a psych...and still you have to be properly re-diagnosed by a psych every so often with some docs in my area...Re-Evaluated is the term they use... Don't Figure!!!

My insurance also won't pay to see a psychologist. They WILL however pay to see a PSYCHIATRIST due to the fact that a psychiatrist is a medical Dr. (MD) and can prescribe medications. And psychologists although they possess a doctorate, may not prescribe meds A lot of insurance companies are not willing to pay for ongoing psychological treatment. It may not be right, but that's just the way it is.

I also have adult ADD. Actually, I've had it since Ive been a child (ADHD), but with age (I'm now 38) it seems the hyperactivity component has gone, although I'm still left with the terrible difficulty in concentration. Since moving, Ive also been unable to find a physician familiar enough with adult add to continue my medications.....and my job and family are really suffering because of this. There are several lists on the web of compassionate doctors in each state, but most are focused on pain. I have found some who also treat chronic fatigue syndrome...but Ive sent several emails inquiring about physicians from each state who are familiar with adult add and prescribing appropriate medications. I will update the forum with the list once I have received their replies. Meanwhile, if anyone has information for their area that they would kindly submit, Im sure there are some pharmacy review members that would be very grateful.
Also, with all of the online referral services setting up face to face doctor consultations, surely some of these offer this service. Does anyone know?

The most complete listings of professionals who treat ADD/ADHD that I have found are addresources.org. and addresource.com.
There is also a web site and online magazine that I have referred people to called additudemag.com which can be helpful with in depth discussions and expert opinions about this disorder.
You might also want to search the adultadd.info list of resources.
I would definitely attempt to research these databases and find a reputable specialist rather than trying to use one of these so-called "referral" Internet sites.

Alumni is right. I believe this condition needs to be medically diagnosed.
There are many conditions that can even cause adult ADD/ADHD symptoms. One can simply be low blood sugar - hypoglycemia which I do have and if I don't eat right it affects my concentration and focus in major ways. Another can be as simple as lack of Vitamin D. Those who are home bound and don't get out into the sun for even short periods of time or eat right can suffer concentration loss. Over the counter D capsules usually are not strong enough as a Dr would prescribe 50K units once a week or two. I have a friend who thought he was ADD, but after initial blood tests it was vitamin D and after a few months he was much better.
These are just a couple that I am aware of. I know how frustrating it can be to feel in a fog not being able to even finish a paragraph in a book. I know that I need to eat something right for my body.
Is what it is and life is not fair

My insurance wont cover my psych visit so my GP has to prescribe me Adderall every month. Kind of a pain to go in monthly to get my script but at least im getting it. Apparently MD's need to take a 8 hour class in order to prescribe adderall because it is a controlled III?? substance..Im just saying regular MD's can prescribe it.
Make sure you say you are having difficulty in at least 2 areas in life, mlike work and school with concentration, listening, finishing projects and reading a book. Also say it affected you when you were a child by getting bad grades but you never got diagnosed. Then you may have to try a couple different meds like strattera or wellbutrin until the doc will prescribe adderall. You can say that you have a friend that has ADD like you and you tried his adderall and it really worked, although some docs might not like that but some will because you have found a drug that works for you.

Never never never admit to trying someone else's meds if you want anything above schedule iv ever again. It's a huge red flag. You will severely jeopardize any chance you have.

About 10 years ago (whenever I was in my last year of college...) I suddenly realized I was going to have to actually get my gpa to around a 3 if I wanted to keep going to school. I was fairly certain I was ADD, given that I couldn't go 3 minutes in class without losing complete focus (maybe it was the girls, it was college). Regardless, I just went to a local doc around campus, told him I was having trouble focusing in class. Wasn't a shady doctor, didn't ask me to see a shrink, just wrote the scrip and said it should help tremendously with class concentration. And, of course, it did, and I graduated with just over a 3.
My point is, so long as you don't appear to be a seeker and give a legit reason for needing adderall (without asking for it by name), most doctor's are fairly willing to prescribe it, if for no other reason than they know that means you'll be coming back every three months for years (and I'm sure there are a few that actually want you to overcome potential attention deficit problems as well). Good luck!

Yes, any physician with the necessary DEA license (not only psychiatrists) can prescribe Adderall but no "8 hour class" is required. You might be thinking about doctors who specifically treat addiction with Suboxone/Subutex.
And Adderall is currently scheduled as a C-II substance
