Default [langtitle=bg]Need advice on withdrawal of several medications[/langtitle]

[lang=bg]I need advice on the following.
Ive been on and off adderall for about 2 years now, I get it through a friend so its not an every day thing. Im able to accomplish and get alot more work done when on it.
In October of 2011 I was diagnosed with bi polar type 2 and give the following medications: Zyprexa , Lithium , fluoxetine , clonazapiem and ambien. I told the doctor I had trouble doing anything and that I was basically just a zombie. I also told the doctor I suffered from panic attacks. The Clonzapiem didnt help with the panic attacks. Now at the begining of the year I went of all medications. I havent felt any real withdraw effects from the medications. Its been about a month now and Ive just been to lazy to go into the doctor again. I get treated at the veterans hospital. Now I contually told my doctor I had trouble focusing and concentrating and there was no mention of possible ADD. Question is when I go back into the doctor should I inform her that Ive been taking adderall and would the doctor possibly write me a script? Or should I just bring up the symtoms of not being able to focus and concentrate and the possible use of something like adderall? Please let me know what you think. Thanks[/lang]

It's been my experience that most doctors will act appalled if you were to tell them that you'd been taking a medication not prescribed to, especially a schedule2 like adderall. So no....I defenitely would not tell him about that. However, I would tell him that you think you have ADD. You probably will want to do your homework and go to some of the adult add websites. They will have lots of information for you and tips on how to discuss this with your doctor.
Unfortunately though, a lot of docs are not that accepting of adult add, at least where I live. They just don't seem to take it very seriously. Did you say the doc you would be seeing is a va doc?
If your doc acts as though they don't take your possibly having adult add very serious, don't give up! There are alot of physicians out there now who specialize in this and if you live in or close to any large city, you should be able to find one that will help you.

Adult ADD is gaining more and more acceptance as a legit medical condition - it used to be that only young kids could have ADD - if you weren't diagnosed as a child - you were doomed - it was IMPOSSIBLE that you coudl have ADD.

With the release of several new prodcuts on the market recently (Vyvanse and one other I can't think of) - there's been a renewed interest in ADD - specifically ADD affecting adults.

I would NOT tell the doctor you were self-medicating - you'll get a big DRUG ABUSER stamp on your medical records - not something you want. But definitely bring up the problems you've been having - after all, that's what doctors are here for -right? And I agree w/ @chera - if one doc won't take you seriously - see another - there are PLENTY of docs out there and although it may be tough - you will find SOMEONE who will take you seriously - I've been trhough it and I know it's hard - but it will happen. Best of luck!

@vetticustoms,i wouldnt say anything about any one drug. Just tell the doc whats going on with you . ask your freind if he will give you info on his or her doctor. This persons doctor isnt affraid to write the medication. This i think would be what i would do in your shoes.

I work for a major oil company and travel. I was in Angola for a few years and could not get adderal...... I now moved back to the states. Adderal made a huge difference in my life. My OCD went away...these rituals were used to remember things. I also can read a book a week like usual.....

I went to a Phychiatrist and told her i am ADD used addies went off because of travel and she asked how many Mg's i needed and wrote the script. She gave me 3 and vist every 3rd month.

Thats my story if it helps.

I would take 3 online tests for ADD and ADHD. Honestly, anyone can show up positive for having ADD by taking the test unless you have absolutely no problems with paying attention. This is how I figured out that i have ADD myself. I took 2 tests when i was young and went to the doctor all by myself. And I can tell you.....never ask the doctor for Adderall 'and' Clonzapiem or you're get no where. If you go in looking for uppers and downers you're gonna look like Elvis!

If you want to get a prescription for Adderall, you have to make your doctor believe you need it to be a productive member of society. You should not tell your doctor that you have been taking this medication without a prescription because you will be labeled a drug abuser and never be prescribed any addictive substances again. You need to walk into the doctor’s office with an agenda and accomplish it. Tell them you have a family history of it and the same symptoms that ailed your siblings are ailing you. Tell them you were against getting any medical treatment for it, but it has become so bad you have no other recourse. Also, tell them this has been the case since childhood. It also never hurts to wiggle your legs and fidget too, both classic symptoms of ADHD.

The majority of psychiatrist give the World Health Organization test for adult ADD....its 20 questions and straight forward. They will prescribe Adderall in a blink of an eye. Many patients don't like it...in fact over half switch to a different drug from anxiety issues, raised blood pressure, or it not working at all.

I was at the docs Monday...I was saying I do not get tired or run down when i do not take the med....she said that is common....in fact folks that drink two pots of coffee will experience greater symptoms as a whole when suddenly quitting caffeine. PCP usually wont write aderral scripts....physchaitrist do.....

So you gave up your whole drug regimen cold turkey for a month? How has your mood responded? I commend you for your toughness, but I fear that startings stimulants while having not been on your bipolar meds for a month might trigger a hypomanic episode. My pdoc prescribes me Adderall, but with clonazepam and Depakote to buffer any mood shifting.

One thing though, asking for a controlled substance by name will sour the relationship. Wait to be properly diagnosed, then let the doctor say I want to give you Adderall. This might take a couple of visits.

I definitely wouldn't tell the Dr. you were taking your friend's medications, that will give you a 'drug addict' label on your records that I am sure would be impossible to erase.
Also, I wouldn't go in specifically asking for it by name.
As others have said, I would take the tests online (a lot of pharm companies actually have them on their websites, I'd just google adult ADHD self test) then go to your Dr. and tell them that you have been suffering for a long time with these symptoms, after you saw a commercial that described exactly how you'd been feeling for years, you went to the sites to take a test and you would really like help with your problem.

A lot of good advice from other posters before me, I'd definitely use it.

    Good luck!
