    Default Sleep Help Needed

I have been taking an all natural suppliment to help me sleep. I seem to have built up a tolerance to this as it is not working any more. Any advice on medications to uses to get a good night sleep, without waking up with that hung over feeling. Right now I have resorted to taking xanax for sleep I do not want to continue this. I also notice it leaves me with a hazy feeling in the morning. I am trying to limit and control my intake of benzos I hear the withdraw from these are hell. I do not want to have to use xanax on a daily basis. I want to continue my as needed for anxiety and panick attacs. My new option for sleep is two glasses of wine before bed I know that cant be good for me. But I have to get some sleep. The lack of sleep is contributing to my anxiety and panic attacks

I would take something NOT all-natural (sominex, things like that instead of melatonin for example. Also try to limit your sugar intake close to bedtime as that may also contribute to not being able to sleep.

I too suffer from sleep issues in addition to anxiety and underlying depression. I used to drink wine to get myself to fall asleep. It works ok in the beginning, but i would not recommend trying to keep that up for the long term. I started needing more and more wine to get "sleepy enough". In addition to the fact that drinking excessive amounts of alcohol prior to sleep has been shown to cause sleep disturbanes. I did a fair amount of research to it and the occasional "night-cap" won't hurt but speaking from experience, don't use it as a crutch. i did and ended up feeling horrible the next days, dehyrdated, waking up multiple times per night. I have read the the alcohol can actually disrupt your sleep rhythms.

I have been giving this some thought and I think I just need to win the lottery so I can retire and dont have to worry about work and the stressful deadlines anymore. Although that would actually require me to play the lottery. LOL. JOKE! Although there may be someting to that. Then again one lesson I have learned money does not buy you happiness!

Try Tylenol PM OR 800mg of ibuprofen thirty minutes prior to going to sleep and seeing if that helps (if you have't already tried that, of course). But a word of caution: prolonged use of this method (5-10 years) have been known to lead to some health complications down the road. I hope the whirlpool works for you!

I had major insomnia caused by depression for years which eventually led me to being fired from my job a few years back. I would easily fall alseep , but then wake up every hour with nightmares until the alarm went off.
Tried everything Over the counter ( Benadryl, Sominex, Melatonin), Meditation, Yoga,
Avoiding caffeine after 3 p.m, Exercise, Avoiding sugar. All helped but not enough.
Insomnia had major consequences on my life. Last month, Started on Mirtazapine 15 mg day, and it has worked wonders. I havent slept this well in years. I'm down to waking up once during the night, but easily fall back to sleep. Mirtazapine has also greatly helped my depression and anxiety during the day. Trying to now get my life back on track. I Wish everyone well on helping there insomnia!!!

@temp, xanax are short life benzos and specifically prescribed for panick attacks and agoraphobia, if you take a few more the may put you down to sleep but chances are you'll wake up in the mìddle on the night because of their so shot 'duration'and hungover. So, indepently if your problem is falling asleep or continue to sleep or both you have to look into hypnotics benzos.

There are many, first names which come to my mind are nitrazepam, midazollam and possibly triazolam too (Halcion ,this last if you have problms to fall asleep but after you do just fine) Of course you don't have to be on them forever just maybe 10 days to re-establish you normal wake/sleep pattern

Not too long ago there was a rather large thread to which I also contributed to and it was specifically abou this subject. Serch for past threads here...you'll find it

Tylenol PM is great for sleep it just sucks that it has tylenol in it lol. And I think you're right about the health complications. I know someone who swore by giving here 10-11 year old boys nyquil to calm them down. One's in and out of jail for domestic violence all the time, the other a normal guy

Tylenol PM works pretty well for sleep. However, its really just a mixture of Tylenol and Benadryl (25 mg/ tab). If pain isnt keeping you awake, you could just try Benadryl and spare your liver from the extra tylenol.

Struggled with insomnia most of my life - I find it hard to shut the brain off and actually fall asleep, carries over into not ever being able to take a nap on a plane or anytime traveling.

I had a doctor years ago prescribe doxepin for fibromyalgia and I got the best nights of sleep I have ever had! But when he re-checked me in 2 weeks, my weight had jumped up by, I don't remember exactly, but I think it was 5 lbs, although I was quite fit then. He thought that was an unacceptable side-effect, so a change of RX and back to the insomnia.

I still struggle with the insomnia, and had never heard of Mirtazapine. Like Healthy Chef, I have been through the whole gambit trying to get a decent night of sleep.

    @temp,
Have you tried valerian? They make it in a tincture which IMO is the most effective. There is a lot of research out there about valerian root. If used continously like anything else it will become less effective but it certainly does not have the addictive properties of the benzos or the hangover effect that benadryl gives to some(like me). Hope you are able to find something that works

Anywhere from 100-1000mg of L-theanine is good for sleep (Theanine: Natural Support for Sleep, Mood, and Weight - Life Extension), I know someone who passed out from 100mg, although it could be because she never had a narcotic in her life and the placebo effect.

Alot of good information here. I want to thank all of you for your posts I will be doing some research and will keep you up to date on what I find and what works for me. I have tried benadryl and it still leaves me with that woozy hung over head in a fog the next morning. I have to strart getting some sleep I know this is contributing to my anxiety problems along with the alcohol as it is a depressant. I have so many issues medical going on now and my primary physician is just not helping me he keeps prescribing meds after meds I feel like a walking pharmacy!

I also get "hungover" from anything with benedryl, I have found that a half dose of that, or anything really is enough, but not too much. Half of a "flexeral" or one .5mg xanax also work well.

Be careful with the alchohol. really can cause bad sleep disturbance!

Dont know what was in that but I have never tried again. I felt out of control all I could do was lay there could not move. I am a control freak I do not like loosing control. It was the weirdest experience not one I want to try again

I actually was going to say exactly what "giddyUp" said.
I too, had issues with sleep due to anxiety. I tried phenibut to put me asleep and well, it put me asleep alright. Only issue is it put me asleep for like 12 hours. I talked with my mom about the problem and she of course said take some benadryl (diphenhydramine). I instinctively put it off, because I had previous experience with the 25mg and I knew it made me feel groggy the next day. So the beginning of the school semester this year I decided to try half a benadryl 12.5mg diphenhydramine and it worked wonders for me. I woke up the next morning without an alarm and I felt rested.
Moral of the story: everyone reacts differently to the OTC and natural products. If you want to be safe and try the melatonin and diphenhydramine, just experiment with different appropriate dosages to see what works best for you.

Alcohol -especially if you're talking about a few drinks- is definitely bad news to get a good 7 or 8 hours good sleep. It may be easier to fall asleep bun then shortly thereafter most experience tens of micro wake-ups (ora true wake up) and messes up the mechanics of sleep such as REM phases and all.

I can tell you that Seroquil works really well for sleeping. It puts on the weight though but it does help. Just a thought for you to ask your doctor.
