Edgardo D is on a distinguished road
It was stated that if a person is taking diltiazem, should not take lovastatin. I am taking both. Dr. knows.?
Diltiazem is a medicine for hypertension. I found out that a person should not take lovastatin, a medicine for lowering cholesterol. How come it was prescribed to me? What will be the effect of this to my health? Isn't a doctor should know what to prescribe or not to his/her patient?

Caution is advised if lovastatin is prescribed in combination with Diltiazem, a CYP450 3A4 inhibitor. Diltiazem can increase the concentrations of lovastatin in the body. Please see your doctor immediately should you have any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, particularly if accompanied by malaise or fever.

The reason for not taking lovastatin when taking diltiazem is that there is a moderate interaction between those drugs. It does not cause immediate visible effects on the person that is life threatening. However, there is an increased risk of developing rhabdomyolysis, the destruction of muscle tissue.

This happens because diltiazem inhibits the action of lovastatin in the body. When this occurs, levels of lovastatin in the blood increases, which can lead to rhabdomyolysis.

Doctors should be aware of this interaction. However, he may have decided to give you these medications because its benefits outweigh the danger.

I suggest that you talk to your doctor about this concern. Hopefully, he is aware of this and have made the necessary adjustments in dosage. These 2 medications can be given together, as long as the lovastatin is taken in very low dosages. Or, an alternative to it is fluvastatin or pravastatin, to lower your cholesterol levels.

If he is not aware of it, then you can either seek the advice of another doctor or tell him to change your medications. A doctor should always be aware of what they prescribe to their patient. Unfortunately, there are still those who are just not responsible and conscientious enough to make themselves aware of it.

Hope this helps.
