Im assuming that you already know what an immunosuppresive is, you just wanted some more information. And everyone, I do believe knows that cortisone was the first immunosuppresive that was ever found, but it's wide ranging side effects kept it from being used on the massive scale. In 1959, the drug called azathioprine was discovered. This drug assisted with the immuno testings and surgeries, but it wasn't until 1970 that the drug cyclosporine was found. Cyclosporine was definitely the drug that allowed for the expansion of kidney transplants. As far as who discovered them, I have no idea. But I do know that Dr. Joseph Murray and his team were the first ones to successfully transplant a kidney in 1954 and that Dr. Murray actually received the Nobel Peace Prize for it.
