There are so many animal lovers on this Forum ... lots of animal threads, also. I currently have one dog, Cleo, a Rotty-mutt-mix, and about twelve cats. Did animal rescue and shelter work for many years, and I loved it. Would love to build an animal sanctuary in my area, there is plenty of open land, but money is tight (of course). As far as I'm concerned nothing beats helping someone (animal or otherwise!) in need...

@newage, I'm definitely partial to dogs over cats. Can't remember a time when there wasn't at least one in the house. I'm a large breed girl. Right now we have a Boxer/Mastiff mix from the pound (THE BEST natured, and my favorite dog ever) and a Jack Russell terrier. The terrier is the boss, let me tell ya and it's pretty funny to watch.

Dog and cat lover here too! One is 120lb Lab mix and the other is an Australian shephard about 75 lbs, both are 11 yrs old and love me more than Ive ever been loved. The Aussie is thee smartest dog Ive ever had. He understands more words than I knew a dog could. You can tell him to go get a certain toy (they have a toy box) say his chicken and he will dig through the box and find the chicken and bring it to me. We just recently got him a haircut, they have very long easily matted fur, and the groomers couldnt believe his age. He now looks like a jr. puppy, with a stubby tail.

We also have an indoor cat, who has her own bedroom, the lab hates cats. And we now have 3 barn cats, one scares me because if I dont feed them fast enough, she tries to bite me. I wont have biting animals.

I also love birds as pets but with cats, its best not to tempt them. We once had a bird that our cat at the time somehow got to the cage and killed our bird. The cage was attached to a ceiling hook much higher than I thought our cat could ever jump. I was wrong. Came home to feathers everywhere. Poor bird, I think the cat had thrown him around quite awhile before he died. I felt awlful. So now no birds other than the beautiful ones in our yard.

Devoted animal lover here as well, have two dogs in the house, one is mine and one is my sisters. Mine is a shih tzu and my sisters is a lab/pitt mix. MY dog runs the house, hers is a wuss! lol LOVE your babies!! They are precious.

I LOVE DOGS .... Cats... not so much. The last one I had was my daughters that she "forgot" to take with her when she moved out on her own, HUGE calico cat that had a permanent case of I HATE EVERYONE and tried to bite everyone that came near her. I just fed her and kept her litter box changed till she quietly passed in her sleep.

    Love and kisses to all

I love dogs! Here is a picture of my 5 year old Lhasa Apso. We are also thinking of getting a Bernese Mountain Dog when we get a bigger place.

I also have a picture of him pretending to drive my car, it's hilarious! Maybe if I get a lot of feedback from that one I can try to find it.

    Awww some cute pooches

Our dogs are our babies - literally, I think we're okay with only ever having dogs. They're so sweet and entertaining and have their own very distinct little personalities and quirks. They're funny to watch.

And then there's the cat. He's pure evil and I suspect actually runs this whole house.

I absolutely do NOT like dogs at all. I was attacked at a very young age and had plastic surgery before Kindergarten as a result by someone's family dog. It scarred me for years. I have owned dogs as pets and they have to win me gradually.

I have had 1 dog in my lifetime I loved and it passed away. The other dogs I've grown up around have all been love/hate relationships. Built strongly on tolerance.

Then we got our black lab. She is without a doubt, the absolute only dog to ever win my trust and heart 100%. She has never been aggressive even when provoked. She is so sweet. Most of my family and close friends respect my issues with dogs. I have tried to get over it and just can't. My dog is different She's also a total diva. The only huge dog I've ever seen who has to have a coat to go outside if it rains. Loves clothes. I'm going to buy her some doggie nails next :P

I'm sorry to hear about your experience in the past.

My lhasa apso was not trained well as a puppy, and sometimes if he gets angry (he will show signs beforehand) he will try to bite, or even go to bite.

It usually depends how they are trained when they are puppies; I know now that I should have trained him when he was younger; not that a little guy's bite will give you scars, but it can hurt.

Dogs that have that kind of behaviour should not be allowed with small children. Even if I know when my dog will get angry, I keep him on a leash and only let people pet him for a short period of time.

There is no such thin as a perfect dog so someone should go into a situation with the time and desire to train the dog what is acceptible and what is not. an untrained dog is just like an un educated person, they just dont know right from wrong. If you dont want to train a dog to be the way you want it, just dont get one. now on the other hand if you are willing to work with thme thye can and will be the most loyal companion you will ever have.

    FLATTIESSSS!!!! (flat coated retrievers).

However, I like the bigger, more "rugged" variation of this dog as opposed to the qualities many breeders look for in show dogs. I had two over the last 20 years, sadly the second one died about a year ago (RIP buddies) and Ive recently decided I need another flattie in my life. They're very tough to find tho (the big ones), breeders consider this variety "misfits" and refuse to breed them because they have "unsuitable genes" (these are actual words Ive heard from breeders), so theyre sold as pets and the vast majority of them never reproduce , so its tough getting one.

    What a great thread!

I love dogs and cats (and animals in general) but these days, due to my chronic pain I can really only commit to a cat. I would love to have a dog, as they are such great company. I recently looked after a friend's Shiba Inu (a really sweet-natured little Japanese dog), and although it hurt me at times taking him for a walk, it was well worth it. The little guy was pulling on his leash so enthusiastically, it was more like he was taking me for a walk. It made me realize how much I'd like to have a dog in addition to my cat, but I just wouldn't be up to it unless things with my spine somehow improved.

At the moment I have a Russian Blue cat who was abandoned when she was just a few months old by her previous owners, who were stupid and irresponsible enough to spray chemical into her right eye, causing partial blindness. I was the only person to show any interest in her, and as I knew the breeder they let me take her home for free (Russian Blues aren't cheap!).

She was a very timid cat at first and will still only let me hold her, but she has really become so much more confident and outgoing compared to before, when she used to just hide most of the time. She is a great companion, although I wish I could join in with her more sometimes when she asks to play. She seems pretty content with the toys I get for her though - ping-pong balls are her favourite right now (I hear her playing football with them in the middle of the night sometimes).

Dogs and cats (and other animals too) can be wonderful companions and they can drastically improve the life of anyone living with some kind of illness or injury, as long as you put in the energy to make sure they are well cared for. They can really help reduce anxiety and depression.

I have 3 dogs, all from the same litter and they are rott/border colli mix. 3 cats that are siamese breed. I love them all just like they were my children!

We ended up with the 3 puppies when a stray adopted us. I was walking through my living room and I heard whining at my front door. Then I opened my door and there was a puppy about 6 months old and she started growling at me. I closed the door, more whining. Opened the door, more growling! Finally I opened the door with a little dish of cat food (thats all I had at the time) and she scarfed it down, and never left my side from that point forward. A few weeks later she had gotten really fat. And then one morning she birthed 9 puppies.

I went on a vacation for 5 days and then came home and left to the stoor a few blocks away. The puppies were about 7 weeks or so. The front door hadn't latched all the way. She got hit by a car about a half block away fom the store. She was following me.

I've been a cat person forever, but grew up around dogs. Just never claimed one for my own. Then about 3 years ago my brother's Australian Shepherds had a litter he needed to get rid of. So we took the brown one and named her Duchess. I did not know what to do with her and kept her outside for the most part of her puppy years. Meanwhile I have acquired a cat or 2 after my lifelong cat friend passed. But let me tell you, Duchess has won me over! She is a doll! A bigger dog (45#), but she thinks she's a lap dog. She gets groomed, rides in the car, follows me everywhere, and thinks she is just a diva. Love it. I can see the attraction to dogs now that I've had her.
