@bobbarker Very interesting man, good post. I scored an 80 out of 100, but I answered the questions as if I wasn't on my benzos. I took the test again and answered how I feel 95% of the time, and got a 20 out of 100. My benzos definitely do the job. This is what it says for someone with a score of 80.
"You have a high level of existential anxiety, which can be best explained as a sense of dissatisfaction with life and a feeling that things are somehow beyond your realm of control. Overall, people with such an outlook often feel helpless, as though nothing is predictable or stable, and wonder why they are not as happy as other people appear to be. They may sometimes feel out of control, afraid of the future or even question whether life has any meaning. Your regular flashes of existential anxiety could send you on a downward spiral if you don't get a grip on them. Adopting a more positive outlook could have a profound effect on the way you view the world, your role in it, and your level of anxiety."

I recommend you go speak with a psychiatrist and get properly diagnosed. Sometimes anxiety is a symptom for other things, and treatments are not always the same.

The only things that make me anxious these days kid's water pistols. For some reason, they induce major panic attacks in me - I'm too embarrassed to go to the docs about it as I think they'll just laugh.![]()

I agree. Anxiety and Depression are sisters and rarely you see one without the other. If you have not been to a Psychiatrist yet you really should. Sometimes your anxiety could just be masking a depressive episode. If so you need to treat the depression so you can eases the anxiety. Good luck!

@crucibelle
The very mention of the damn things brings me out in a sweat. I'm okay when I see them in shops, all boxed-up etc. The problem is when I'm out and about and see kids using them - I'm always worried that real bullets or urine is going to shoot out of them. I've no idea where this phobia originated from ... Childhood, no doubt![]()

The last exposure therapy I had occurred when I was an altar boy and the priest tricked me into playing a game called 'Where's God's sausage?' with him.

Trust me, a good doctor won't laugh but will be understanding and try to figure out WHY you feel that way. There are many things that people feel are silly which may be distressing to them. It may very well just be a specific phobia, or it may be something else. Anxiety is a complicated thing.

If this is the only cause of your anxiety, it is probably a specific phobia. It does not sound like an anxiety disorder, unless there are other things going on. For example, were you abused as a child and the abuser often used a water gun? Were you actually shot at in your life and now are afraid of guns in general? Did you grow up in a war zone and were exposed to the sound of shooting and were traumatized by it? Like I said, many causes and someone would have to properly evaluate you.
If it is a specific phobia, the only medication that would help is a benzodiazepine, but this is only SHORT TERM (literally if someone has a fear of flying you give them this, it is NOT a daily thing). The only true treatment for this is CBT and as someone else mentioned, gradual exposure therapy.

@jgrn87, this is all very good advice, but I hope your realize @jholden40 was more than likely joking around.(Although methinks @keith K Stone was not.)

I'm smarter than you think you are.
I rated slightly above average but I think that's because it's the weekend and as I get older the less I could give a shit. Must try to remember that Monday morning.

It's funny, I was talking to a psych once and he said that age often brings a reduction in people's anxiety levels, and for the reason you mention; you get older and take some things less seriously. It's worked for me - I'm 98 and don't give a shit about anything anymore.
