Thread: What is the difference between Flexeril and Methocarbamol when used to treat muscle spasms

  1. Default What is the difference between Flexeril and Methocarbamol when used to treat muscle spasms

Over the last 15 years I have had a recurring pain in my shoulder which my doctor treated with Flexeril; it worked. This time the doctor prescribed Methocarbamol with no explanation. Do you know if there is a significant difference between the two?

They are both muscle relaxants under different drug classes.

Flexeril is a tricyclic antidepressant compound that is used clinically as a long-acting skeletal muscle relaxant and analgesic while Methocarbamol is a central muscle relaxant.

One possible reason why your doctor switched you to methocarbamol is that flexeril should be used only for short periods. There is no evidence that flexeril would be effective in treatment for longer than two or three weeks.

The side effects of the two are almost the same (drowsiness, headache). Same precautions are also applied with methocarbamol like avoid alcohol & other CNS depressants.
